Protecting forest defenders.

Meet Human Rights Watch. They’re shedding light on the human rights abuses of people on the front lines of deforestation.

This is part of our Meet the Organization series–a collection of deep dives into the initiatives receiving larger, dedicated support from Klarna’s 1% pledge, and what they hope to achieve with it.

Initiative: Human Rights Watch

Main focus: Restore forests and other landscapes

UN Sustainable Development Goals: 15- Life on Land, 13 - Climate Change, 16- Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions

Areas of operation: The Amazon

WHY WE GIVE ONE Too often, people on the front lines of efforts to stop deforestation are victims of violence, intimidation, and murder. Indigenous people and local communities face growing threats from harmful industries in their lands and territories and authorities routinely fail to hold perpetrators accountable for their crimes. In Brazil alone, more than 300 people were killed between 2009 and 2019 in conflicts over the use of land and resources in the Amazon – many of them by people involved in illegal deforestation. Human Rights Watch (HRW) sheds light on human rights abuses and pressures governments to enforce legislation and policies to stop these destructive deforestation practices.

HOW WE GIVE ONE With the support of Give One, HRW can intensify their efforts to shed light on destructive practices and human rights abuses in the Amazon rainforest and put pressure on governments to enforce legislation and stop these practices through:  1) Investigations: Their researchers work in the field uncovering facts that create an undeniable record of human rights abuses linked to deforestation, 2) Exposing: They tell the stories of what they found, sharing them with millions of social media and online followers each day. News media often report on their investigations, furthering reach, and 3) Change: They meet with governments, the United Nations, rebel groups, corporations, and others to exert diplomatic or economic pressure to see that deforestation is reduced, laws are enforced, and justice is served.

MEET AN IMPACTER Luciana is a researcher for the Environment and Human Rights Division at Human Rights Watch. She designs research projects that investigate rights abuses and environmental harm in collaboration with partners inside and outside of HRW. “I joined Human Rights Watch because its core mission is to seek justice for egregious abuses, even if it requires long-term engagement,” she says. “We have colleagues who fought alongside local partners for decades to bring a single powerful person to justice, but sometimes that’s just how long it takes to achieve meaningful change.“
