Luke is a Marine Biologist with Blue Marine Foundation, restoring overexploited native oyster reefs along the coast of the UK. He’s also one of Give One’s ocean heroes whose work we’re highlighting to celebrate World Ocean Month 2022.

The reefs Luke works with are crucial habitats for hundreds of species, and the oysters are critical for healthy and clean oceans. Oysters filter and clean water, provide habitats for hundreds of species and reduce the impacts of excess nutrients. However, the oyster population has declined significantly in the UK due to overfishing, diseases, and environmental pressures.

Luke’s work protecting millions of oysters increases the health of the surrounding ocean and gives us a better understanding of native oysters’ contribution to ocean water quality and biodiversity, which affects everyone.

Luke’s work and the work of Give One’s other ocean heroes benefit all of us. Many of the organizations they work for rely on the generosity of donors like you. To learn more about these organizations or make your own contribution by donating, visit Milkywire, our strategic sustainability partner.
